On January 13, 00:00 AM ET, the Moon joins the Sun and Pluto in the sign of Capricorn. We are experiencing a powerful New Moon, the first one of 2021 and the first one after the Total Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius of December 14 took place.
This cosmic alignment is marking the beginning of a brand new cycle of development. New Moons represent a rebirth and a fresh start: they remind us that, just like the Moon, everything is constantly changing, and that we have cyclical opportunities to begin anew and reinvent ourselves.
The fact that the Sun and the Moon are in a conjunction with Pluto is exponentially increasing the intensity of the current planetary configuration. Their alignment represents an invitation to release attachments to the past that aren’t serving us any longer, to be able to make room for something different. Get ready for a deep inner and outer metamorphosis, and be prepared to let go of what has run its course.
To celebrate the arrival of New Moon in Capricorn we are hosting global live guided meditation, and we invite you to join us and Moon Omens Soul Family on our YouTube channel and meditate together. The energy and experience is going to be amazing!
New Moon in Capricorn: Giving Birth to New Structures
Capricorn, as an archetype, is about taking responsibility for our lives and our choices: it corresponds to the processes of aging and maturation, to the ability for self-regulation, and our relationship with discipline. Capricorn correlates to both the structure of our consciousness and the structure of society, and to the boundaries that define and limit a certain form: for this reason, this sign correlates with time, space, limitations, and restrictions.
The New Moon in Capricorn begins a lunar cycle in which we will be encouraged to give birth to new systems and to establish new boundaries, which honor and respect the changes taking place in our inner reality. The Cosmos is inviting us to find creative ways to deal with the conditions available in the present moment and to transform outdated structures.
During the upcoming month, we may be confronted with the limitations imposed by our time-space reality. The current planetary alignments are likely to show us what does not work anymore, what has lost value and purpose, and what needs to change, both at a global socio-economic level and at a personal scale.
New Moon at 23° Capricorn: Integrating Lessons from the Past
The current New Moon is happening at 23°Capricorn, just one degree away from the 22° degree of the sign, where the Saturn-Pluto conjunction took place just one year ago. The Saturn-Pluto alignment inaugurated a 35 years cycle of absolute social transformation. Their conjunction marked the beginning of a global structural breakdown. It emphasized the need to break free from systems that are crystallized, oppressive, and limiting, and highlighted the necessity to build new ones, that support personal and collective empowerment.
The New Moon in Capricorn that we are experiencing right now may bring up again issues that first emerged one year ago. It may highlight the need to address certain themes differently and invite us to integrate the lessons that we have learned throughout 2020 by establishing concrete and long-lasting adjustments.

New Moon conjunct Pluto: an Imperative to Transform
The fact that Pluto is currently in a conjunction with the Sun and the Moon will intensify the upcoming lunar cycle and infuse our experiences with a strong Plutonian quality. Pluto has been deeply transforming the Capricorn archetype since 2008 and will continue to do so until 2023, when it will enter Aquarius.
Pluto, named after the mythological Lord of the Underworld, is the modern ruler of Scorpio and it is related to issues of power and powerlessness, and to our deepest unconscious material. This includes our shadows, our unprocessed wounds, our pain, our hidden talents and gifts, our secrets, our Soul’s evolutionary intentions and desires.
Pluto represents the force of evolution: this planet demands transformation and reminds us that change is going to happen, whether we are happy with it or not. The best choice we have is to release resistance and cooperate with it.
Sun conjunct Pluto in Capricorn: Creative Regeneration
Conjunctions are angles of 0°, from our perspective on Earth. They happen when planetary bodies align at the same degree of the same Zodiac sign: their energies merge and work together as one.
When the Sun is conjunct Pluto, the need to radically transform our sense of identity and our sense of purpose emerges. The Sun in Astrology is the celestial body we are most conscious of, and it represents the light of our awareness. On this New Moon, we may become aware of unconscious material we have been repressing and have an opportunity to integrate it.
The conjunction between the Sun and Pluto promotes creative regeneration and the transmutation of our sense of purpose. As their alignment happens in Capricorn, we are encouraged to think about how we can reconcile our desire for creative expression and self-actualization with a socially relevant need. The invitation of this aspect is to reflect upon how to honor the expression of our life force and enrich it through a social function that allows us to offer lasting value to the collective.
Moon conjunct Pluto in Capricorn: Emotional Metamorphosis
The conjunction between the New Moon and Pluto, on the other hand, demands a complete transformation of the way we are used to dealing with emotions. Capricorn correlates with self-regulation, which implies the ability to manage our emotional needs in a mature and constructive way. However, a common distortion linked to this archetype is the suppression of our feelings and our vulnerability due to shame, guilt, and self-judgment.
Pluto conjunct the Moon invites us to confront our repressed emotions and to explore any underlying emotional dynamic linked to an attempt to generate a sense of safety. Throughout the upcoming lunar cycle, past patterns that we thought we overcame long ago can emerge again, and we may have an opportunity to understand what they are truly about by seeing them through a different lens.
Becoming aware of any compulsive way we tend to express emotions, and of any expectation we place on others in regards to our emotional needs, will help us make the most out of this potent alignment.
Saturn Aspects: Working with Inevitable Limitations and Transmuting Anger
Saturn is the planetary ruler of the Capricorn New Moon: its condition will give us more information about the energetic quality of the current cosmic configuration. Saturn has recently entered Aquarius and it is now conjunct with both Jupiter and Mercury. Moreover, the Lord of Time and Karma is creating square aspects to both Mars and Uranus in Taurus.
The archetypes involved reflect the friction between our need and desire to be free and follow our instinct, and the restrictions and limitations being enforced upon us. This configuration also highlights the need to reflect upon how we unconsciously oppress ourselves, how we judge ourselves, and how we limit ourselves, independently from external circumstances.
The square is a 90° angle reflecting inner tension: the planets involved are trying to express themselves at the same time and they are blocking the expression of each other. The purpose of squares is to promote a shift in our approach to an issue: these aspects can be challenging, but they can also be empowering and motivating, it all depends on our mindset.
The exact square between Mars and Saturn, in particular, brings completion and culmination to themes that first emerged around August 2020, as it represents the last one of a cycle of three alignments between the two planets. The stress we are experiencing may bring up more anger and frustration, and the Mars-Saturn square reflects a need to find ways to channel these energies constructively, rather than suppressing and internalizing them, or misplacing and expressing them destructively.
New Moon in Capricorn: Thriving in Times of Transition
This New Moon may confront us with the awareness of the limits of our personal power. However, it will also allow us to access another kind of power, linked with the acceptance of the present conditions and the ability to come into contact with our innate resilience, with our capacity to adapt to any situation and make something good out of it.
This does not mean giving up, feeling victimized, and staying stuck in passivity. We are encouraged to find our own and unique ways to work with the obstacles we cannot get rid of and to discern what is worth trying to change and what is not.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” ― Reinhold Niebuhr
The invitation of this cosmic event is to transform the way we interface with and perceive our limitations. Any practice that allows you to ground and to connect with your body and your breath is going to help you navigate this intense shift and make the most out of the current reality in spite of the restrictions we are facing.
Embracing change and releasing attachments to the past is the key to keep thriving in times of transition. The New Moon in Capricorn encourages us to find ways to connect with our sense of purpose within the conditions available in the present moment.
