On December 21, 1:20 PM ET, Jupiter will be exactly conjunct Saturn at 0°29’ of Aquarius. The conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn propels us into 2021 with a newfound sense of hope and a strong desire for significant collective change.
The two planets have ended their long journey through Capricorn almost simultaneously, and they are now ushering in a completely different energy. Their exact alignment, traditionally known as the “Great Conjunction”, marks the beginning of a New Era of Air, and we will feel its effect for the upcoming 20 years.
The Great Conjunction: the Dawn of a New Era
Jupiter and Saturn meet approximately every 20 years: ancient Astrologers considered their conjunction the event marking the shift of historical eras. However, the alignment we experience in 2020 is even more significant than other Jupiter Saturn conjunctions because, for the first time in 200 years, the two planets will meet in an Air sign, Aquarius. The previous conjunctions happened in Earth archetypes: this elemental change reflects the enormous shift in global consciousness currently taking place. From now on, Jupiter and Saturn will continue to meet in Air signs until 2159.
If this was not enough, this cosmic event is happening on the 0° degree of Aquarius, symbolizing the beginning of a new evolutionary phase, and simultaneously with the ingress of the Sun in Capricorn and the Solstice. This is another very relevant factor to consider: this moment represents the literal and metaphorical start of a new season, Winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and Summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The fact that Jupiter and Saturn are joining on the Solstice intensifies the power of their current conjunction and its relevance for the collective. This cosmic event marks the dawn of a new era of innovation, originality, and groundbreaking discoveries.
Is the Age of Aquarius starting?
Many of us are wondering whether or not the Great Conjunction represents the beginning of the Aquarian Age. There is not an official agreement upon this in the Astrology community: some believe this may be the case, others state that the Age of Aquarius will begin only with the transit of Pluto through Aquarius, starting in 2023, others think that it already started, other that we are not quite there yet and that the transition may take even longer.
The Astrological Ages last approximately 2500 years, and what most Astrologers agree upon is that the transition between Ages is a long process: it can take between 50 and 150 years. This event doesn’t happen overnight, as it implies a radical and all-encompassing paradigm shift that affects all aspects of our reality and global consciousness itself.
However, the vast majority of Astrologers believe that we are right in the middle of the transition between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius. We are probably in the final phases of the process. Even if we don’t know exactly how long it will take, the flaws and the distortions of obsolete systems have been ruthlessly exposed during 2020: this is an integral and essential part of the transition of the Ages.
The destruction of the current structures is necessary to create space for new ones, and it is not over yet. In 2021, we are likely to experience more purging, and an ongoing conflict between the old and the new, marked by the potent square between Saturn and Uranus, active throughout the whole year.
Jupiter conjunct Saturn in Aquarius: Blending different Energies
While Jupiter expands, Saturn contracts: the two planets couldn’t be more different. Yet, they are joining forces on the Solstice, and their conjunction will bring lasting global changes. Jupiter will be in Aquarius for almost the entire 2021, while Saturn will be there for two and a half years. Their energies will inspire and motivate us to bring our ideas into form, to embody our individuality and originality without fear, and to give birth to something unique and revolutionary.
Jupiter in Aquarius expands our vision, our capacity to be innovative and dream big. Meanwhile, Saturn helps us make our dreams real and tangible and invites us to link our vision and goals to a relevant social need. Even if they are very different, these two planets can work well together, as they complement each other.
Aquarius has a natural inclination to experiment and try new things: the Jupiter transit through the sign supports the Jupiterian need to explore and expand while the transit of Saturn will help us cultivate discipline and practicality, balancing any tendency to be too abstract, ungrounded, or idealistic.
Breakthroughs & Community Building
In 2021, we will also experience the effects of the long term transit of Uranus, the modern ruler of Aquarius, through Taurus. Uranus’ influence tends to be disruptive and unsettling. However, together with Saturn and Jupiter, Uranus will help us get out of stagnation.
These transits will inspire us to reconnect with nature, to take action towards significant social change, and to create alternative systems based on equality, communion, and mutual respect. Communities will be an essential part of the upcoming years. Aquarius is associated with all those connections we form with like-minded Souls who share similar dreams, goals, and visions, but also with feelings of alienation and loneliness due to the sensation of not fitting in anywhere. Because of this paradox, a risk could be to sacrifice our individual needs and expression just for the sake of belonging to a group.
Jupiter conjunct Saturn in Aquarius: Science & Technology
Aquarius invites us to see things from a higher vantage point, and to cultivate objectivity and detachment: this is the archetype related to science, technology, and the Internet. For this reason, we will keep witnessing a radical transformation of the way we work, interact, and communicate, something that is already taking place.
Connecting and exchanging ideas with people from different cultures and backgrounds will be the key to harness the energy of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius. Being open to learning from each other will allow us to exponentially increase our creativity and our capacity to bring forth innovation.
Jupiter conjunct Saturn in Aquarius: Liberation from Conditioning
The Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius invites us to dive deeper into what Carl Jung defined as the individuation process. This means becoming aware of the conditioning and limiting beliefs we have unconsciously internalized, and finding our own unique ways to break free from them and get closer to our essence.
Aquarius encourages us to liberate ourselves from outdated ways of being and from all those behaviors that we adopt in order to fit in, yet don’t feel authentic and real. This cosmic event is inviting us to stop holding on to the past, to align with the changing paradigm, and to join the global transformation.
