The Story of Rhodochrosite
Born from the rising, hot waters of the Earth, bursting with passion and exuberance, rhodochrosite is a joyful crystal to lift your heart and inspire a deep sense of self-love. Also known as the ‘Rosa del Inca’ or ‘Inca Rose,’ rhodochrosite was thought to be remnants of the spilled blood of their ancestors by the Inca, and is to this day the national gemstone of Argentina. Named for the Greek ‘rhodon’, meaning rose, and ‘chros’, meaning color, this rose-colored crystal bears much in common with a rose itself- both open the heart, illicit joy and pleasure, and foster love and compassion.

Physical Properties
Appearance
Rhodochrosite ranges in pinkish hues from bright reddish pink to vibrant watermelon to soft rosy pinks. It can even be found in shades of brown, orange, and yellow. It’s most often found included on its matrix rock with some darker coloring and often has layers of white banding. It is mostly opaque, with some minor translucence possible.
The purest cut crystals that contain no matrix material and have the most vibrant coloring are known as ‘gemmy’ rhodochrosite, and are often more translucent and range from rosy or fuschia pink to shades of fiery red.
This vibrant pink coloring is associated with a heart that’s linked to its divine knowing, the higher awareness of the heart space that’s pure compassion, acceptance, and grace. It’s softening, gentle, uplifting, joyful, and sweet, evoking love and pleasure in your life.
Composition
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate. The manganese gives it its pink hue, and also directly affects the heart blood, physically and energetically. Carbonates are ‘bioregulating,’ which means they help regulate growth and your natural biological processes. Rhodochrosite also often includes traces of iron and calcium (which creates the white coloring), along with magnesium, zinc, cobalt, and cadmium.
It has a trigonal crystal structure, which relates to the triangle shape, sparking creativity, forward motion, and the balancing of opposing forces. It’s found in hydrothermal veins within the Earth, created by pressurized, often magma-heated waters within the ground, which imbues rhodochrosite with its essence of fire and water energies and its ability to catalyze our creativity and lift us into higher emotional states.

It’s very beneficial for aging and the physical issues that can occur as we grow older, including liver spots, general weakness, lowered libido, osteoporosis, loss of hearing, and poor memory. Rhodochrosite comes in a few different varieties, all with similar healing qualities as described above:
Brown Rhodochrosite
A rare variety found mostly in South Africa in shades of pale to cinnamon brown, that has a more grounding, stabilizing energy than its pink counterpart.
Dogtooth Rhodochrosite
This is a specific shape of gemmy rhodochrosite that has a scalenohedral crystal shape that comes to a point at the end, resembling a dog’s tooth, and is often flame red.
Rhodochrosite Stalactite
This is a form of rhodochrosite that was created from water dripping down from manganese rich rocks. It comes in a pillar shape or as a cut slice with circular ring forms.
